Candidates have ignored how small businesses are taxed

Most small-business owners do not pay corporate taxes but are taxed as individuals, a distinction that makes it difficult to determine whether the platform of Republican John McCain or Democrat Barack Obama would best serve small-business interests, says veteran Washington reporter Keith Girard in the fourth in a series of columns. McCain made cutting the corporate tax rate a focus of his address at NFIB's summer summit while Obama is pushing a plan to raise taxes for households earning $250,000 or more a year.
