Mainframes, virtualization propel server spending upward

Businesses bought 8% more servers worldwide in the second quarter, compared with the same period last year, with much of the buying being driven by mainframe and virtualization strategies, according to a Gartner report. The server demand translated to a 19.5% revenue spike for vendors, compared with a year ago, for a final tally of $13.2 billion. IBM was the big winner among vendors, posting year-over-year revenue growth of 23.9% in the quarter.
