Google is betting on technology that smooths traffic flow rather than providing new means of propulsion as a means of transforming transportation, writes Jeffrey Ball. Technology from newly acquired Waze allows drivers to report traffic tie-ups, allowing fellow drivers to adjust routes to save time, fuel and emissions. "Cool technology comes in many varieties," Ball contends. "For the foreseeable future, the kind that's largely invisible may matter more than the kind that's shiny and red."
