How a Slate editor evaluates job candidates

Many young people are terrible at applying for jobs, writes Katherine Goldstein, an editor at Slate who says she has read about 500 resumes over the past five years. A bad cover letter means your resume will be ignored, as will clumsy formalities and tales about your pre-college accomplishments. Show that you're knowledgeable about the company and don't be timid about advocating yourself, she writes.
