Rail stakeholders raise concerns about single operators, DOT-111 cars

A federal panel this week heard stakeholder concerns about single operators and DOT-111 railcars following the recent derailment in Quebec. Retrofitting all DOT-111 cars is "impractical if not impossible," Cheryl Burke, a rail safety executive for Dow Chemical, told officials from the Federal Railroad Administration and Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration. Dow supports a "holistic risk-management framework" for these concerns, with improvements to railcars, operating standards, infrastructure and accident responses.
