U.S. decides same-sex spouses are married under tax law

The Treasury Department says same-sex spouses in every state will be treated as married under federal tax law, regardless of whether local authorities recognize the marriage. The decision comes in response to the Supreme Court's ruling that parts of the Defense of Marriage Act are unconstitutional. The law barred the Internal Revenue Service from accepting joint tax returns from same-sex spouses.
