New dietary guidelines proposed

An advisory committee Friday proposed revised dietary guidelines that will impact a number of U.S. government food programs, with wide-ranging implications for the food industry. Consumption of grains was de-emphasized somewhat, the recommended intake of fruits and vegetables increased and the new guidelines advised limiting the intake of trans fats. "Given the negative impact these fats have on health, members companies are striving to formulate products that not only have little or no trans fat, but that also have lower levels of saturated fat," said Mark Nelson of the Grocery Manufacturers of America.
