GDP expands at sluggish pace in second quarter

The anemic 1.6% growth in gross domestic product during the second quarter this year reflects weakness in consumer spending -- but it overstates the weakness in the overall economy, writes Reed Construction Data Chief Economist Jim Haughey. He expects GDP to recover in the third quarter. Distressed commercial and residential real estate markets continue to weigh on the economy.
