Vertical greenhouse can feed 350,000 people per year

Sweden-based Plantagon -- a 2010 finalist for the annual Sustainability Innovation Award -- is developing a new concept for greenhouses around the world by 2012. The futuristic greenhouses, ranging from five stories to 25 stories, could produce four times as much produce as traditional models -- and the largest one, costing up to $550 million could feed 350,000 people annually. But some greenhouse-engineering experts question the sustainability of a vertical greenhouse that leaves most plants in shaded areas.
