Life on Earth may have originated on Mars, according to geochemistry researcher Steven Benner. Chemicals that helped catalyze organic molecules into the first living creatures on Earth may have been catapulted from the Red Planet by volcanic explosions or meteor strikes -- a lucky break, since Mars ultimately proved too arid to support life as we know it. "If our hypothetical Martian ancestors had remained on Mars, there might not have been a story to tell," Benner says.
