Retailers prepare for tech infusion

As customers become accustomed to the convenience of online shopping, brick-and-mortar retailers are adding new technologies to their stores to decrease costs and improve the customer experience. In-store kiosks at a Food Lion prototype store suggest recipes to go with customers' food and wine preferences, and the "Shopping Buddy" at Stop & Shop is a small screen that uses consumers' loyalty cards to guide shoppers to their favorite foods based on previous purchases. Such technologies can help boost sales by suggesting additional items, but one retail consultant warns stores will have to ensure consumers their privacy is protected before they warm up to the idea.
