First-half ad numbers

Total U.S. advertising spending rose 5.7% to $59.5 billion over the first half of the year compared with a year earlier, according to the VNU-owned research service Nielsen Monitor-Plus. Other key findings include:

  • Cable ad spending up 13.1%
  • Internet ad spending up 12.6%
  • Automotive led all categories in spending
  • Coca-Cola led all marketers in product placement
