Study: Red blood cell substitute improves survival of sickle cell mice

A Canadian study concluded that a hemoglobin-based oxygen carrier from Hemosol BioPharma can protect mice with sickle cell disease from the lethal effects of acute oxygen deprivation. Researchers found that four of 12 mice with the disease survived after receiving HRC 101 in an oxygen deprivation setting, and the survival time for the other eight mice was extended.
