Desktop virtualization pitting VMware against Microsoft

Although Google clearly is Microsoft's top rival, VMware has emerged as the software giant's No. 2 competitor with virtual machine software that could undermine the dominance of Microsoft's Windows operating system. Until now, virtualization technology mainly has been used in data center applications, but companies are starting to use it to manage individual employee desktops, threatening one of Microsoft's core business.
