FDA probe finds unsanitary conditions at farms linked to egg recall

An investigation by the Food and Drug Administration found multiple unsanitary conditions, including hen houses containing live mice, birds and piles of manure, at Hillandale Farms and Wright County Egg, the two Iowa egg farms implicated in the recent nationwide salmonella outbreak. The FDA said it will start inspecting 600 egg-production facilities soon to ensure that they are complying with federal egg-safety rules that took effect July 9.
