Malpractice system is necessary but needs improvements

Memphis infectious-disease specialist Dr. Manoj Jain says that a malpractice system is necessary to hold doctors to a basic standard of care and give patients a say in how care should be delivered, even though the system can push doctors to practice defensive medicine. Jain says better communication with patients is one step to avoid lawsuits, but laments that the health care overhaul bill was a missed opportunity to make major system improvements.
