Recovery seen in global chlor-alkali industry this year

Pricing and production in the global chlor-alkali market improved in the first half of the year, enabling industry players to slightly recover from a slump in operating rates that started in 2008. U.S. chlor-alkali makers are optimistic as demand for chlorine, caustic soda and bleach is on the rise. "Assuming economic recovery returns to historical levels for the housing and automotive markets, the outlook for chlor-alkali in the next 12 months will stay on its consistently more positive trend, as these are essential markets for driving demand in the industry," said Carlo Guarino, an executive with Dow Chemical.
