Home birth with midwife safe, Canadian study shows

A Canadian study found a home birth attended by a registered midwife was as safe as a conventional hospital birth and may have fewer complications. Researchers said data on almost 13,000 births showed a mortality rate per 1,000 of 0.35 for those occurring at home, compared with 0.57 for hospital births attended by midwives and 0.64 for those attended by physicians.
