California firm turns gas into fuel without petroleum

California-based Carbon Sciences has developed new technology called "Gas to Liquids" that uses carbon dioxide and natural gas for gasoline production, eliminating the need for petroleum. The system, which could be unveiled next year, can use gas from coal-fired power plants, landfills, municipal waste and algae. Byron Elton, Carbon Sciences' CEO, said the recent BP oil spill reinforced the need to find alternatives to petroleum.
