DOT unveils uniform standards for passenger rail cars

The Transportation Department has unveiled a set of design standards for passenger rail cars. "These standardized bi-level passenger rail cars will be able to operate nationwide and are compatible with existing equipment," said Joseph Szabo, administrator of the Federal Railroad Administration. The uniform standards will boost U.S. manufacturers' ability to compete, as well as make train maintenance and repair easier.
