N.Y. investigates "independent contractor" classification

New York construction companies will be subject to new scrutiny with regard to how they pay contractors. About 15% of the state's construction workers are paid in cash or wrongly classified as independent contractors, and the state plans to crack down on the practice. Contractors could face fines or criminal penalties for wrongly classifying workers.
