Produce-rich Salinas showcases school-nutrition rules

The salad bar at Sherwood Elementary School in Salinas, Calif., was the centerpiece this week when a congressman and a USDA official celebrated the start of school-nutrition standards under the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act. The district used grant money to set up salad bars in each school and Rep. Sam Farr, D-Calif., touted the agriculture-rich area, which produces much of the lettuce consumed in the U.S., as a good source of produce for government programs.
