FAA shifting more safety oversight to manufacturers

The list of companies approved by the FAA to self-certify the safety of their products is growing. More manufacturers, including Boeing, are expected to receive their Organization Designation Authorization next year, allowing them to appoint staff engineers who will oversee much of the organization's safety testing and certification. Former NTSB Chairman Jim Hall thinks that's a mistake. "The federal government, because of shrinking resources, is turning over key parts of transportation-safety oversight," he says. "History tells us this could be a very dangerous path."
