Health care debate seen as obstacle to FAA reauthorization

The debate over health care reform is dominating the attention of the Senate Finance Committee, delaying consideration of an FAA reauthorization bill that supporters say is key to improving aviation safety. "Health care is sort of standing in the way," acknowledges Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., a member of the Finance Committee. "It's sucking the air out of everything else." The Senate Commerce Committee already has passed the bill, loaded with new mandates on pilot training and fatigue, but the full chamber cannot take up the measure until the Finance Committee gives its okay.
