Retailers use back-to-school season as holiday predictor

Retailers are using back-to-school sales results to determine what they need to stock for the holiday season, and the lackluster school sales could lead to reduced stocks and orders for the holidays. Some retailers, such as Gap, will have less inventory but are prepared to restock quickly if there's demand. Retailers also are being cautious about seasonal hiring.
