Avian health expert offers his take on FDA egg farm inspections

Recent FDA inspections of the Iowa egg farms that were the subject of last month's massive recall were the first under new, more stringent safety rules that took effect in July. The new rules seem to signal a switch in the agency's focus, said veterinarian and career avian expert David A. Halvorson, from ensuring the absence of Salmonella Enteritidis to ensuring compliance with effective prevention plans that start with keeping the rodent population in check.
