Experts: Latest Gulf mishap may postpone lifting of drilling ban

A Thursday blast on Mariner Energy's shallow-water platform in the Gulf of Mexico could prompt the federal government to continue its push for tighter offshore-drilling reforms and delay lifting a moratorium on deepwater drilling, experts said. The incident dealt a major blow to producers seeking an early end to the ban and raised more concerns about offshore-drilling safety. "This explosion will make it less likely that the moratorium on offshore drilling will be lifted," said Rick Muller, an analyst for Energy Security Analysis.
