USDA vows to set new rules on biotech sugar beet approval

The Department of Agriculture on Wednesday announced plans to establish interim rules on the approval of biotech sugar beets by the end of the year in response to concerns from producers, as well as a court decision citing the agency's lack of environmental impact assessment of the crops. The USDA said it will prioritize regulatory review of Monsanto's Roundup Ready sugar beet seeds, whose approval was revoked by a federal court in August.
