Math curriculum changes devote more time to covering fewer concepts

Teachers in states that have adopted the Common Core State Standards are expected to cover fewer concepts this year but will allow more time and depth to each concept and skill. Kindergartners in New York will be taught to count to 100 in various ways and writing numbers to 20, rather than introductory skills in algebra or statistics. "You have to deepen their understanding," said Mayra Baldi, a kindergarten teacher in Brooklyn.
