Sen. Wyden's proposal for used-fuel storage addresses short-term safety

Legislation proposed by Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., that addresses the safe storage of highly radioactive used nuclear fuel needs more support, writes John Pearson, president of the Oregon chapter of Physicians for Social Responsibility. Storing used nuclear fuel rods in dry casks, rather than in used-fuel pools, presents an immediate and short-term solution while waiting for the legislation to be fully enacted. Dry cask storage held up well during the Fukushima Daiichi accident.
