USDA predicts low food inflation for 2013

The USDA's consumer price index calls for a 1.5% to 2.5% increase in food inflation this year, rising to 2.5% to 3.5% in 2014. Last year's drought took a smaller-than-expected toll on prices, and retailers are often settling for smaller margins, rather than raising prices on finished goods when commodity prices rise, USDA research economist Richard Volpe says.
