Valero's departure from cellulosic venture shows challenges in scaling up

Valero Energy's decision to bow out of a cellulosic ethanol venture with Mascoma and shift its attention to a renewable diesel venture with Darling International underscores the challenges that cellulosic ethanol faces in scaling up, writes Vicki Vaughan. The Diamond Green Diesel plant in Louisiana is easy to scale up because it can use various feedstocks, said Valero spokesman Bill Day. "Plus, those feedstocks are really inexpensive," Day said.
