Making the time to have a meaningful conversation with an employee about his or her performance and goals is the surest way to create engagement, says Derrick Barton, the chief talent officer at the Center for Talent Retention. Workers of every generation need engagement to thrive, he notes, though younger employees tend to leave a company faster and tell more people when they're unhappy with their work.
