Sprint will release Android-powered HTC Hero on Oct. 11

Sprint Nextel will become the second U.S. carrier to feature Google's Android operating system -- along with access to the Android Marketplace -- with the Oct. 11 launch of HTC's Hero smartphone, the device's first entry into the American market. T-Mobile USA sells an Android-powered HTC phone, but wireless customers have yet to widely flock to devices equipped with the open-source software. Analysts expect Android to get a substantial boost from Sprint's subscriber base.
