Calif.'s $6.4B Bay Bridge opens: The highlights of the new span

The $6.4 billion San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge in California opened to traffic Monday night after 11 years of construction. It replaces the bridge that was damaged during a major earthquake in 1989 and includes several features that engineers say should help the bridge withstand future earthquakes. The span features energy-efficient lighting and a bike and pedestrian path.
