Can mixed problem sets improve math learning?

The U.S. Department of Education's Institute of Education Sciences is studying the use of interleaving -- a teaching method that uses mixed, but related, sets of problems -- to teach math. Early research in Tampa, Fla., shows students performed better on tests using interleaving problems -- 72% -- while they scored 38% on traditional problems that focused on one math skill.
