Education Department floats new gainful employment measures

New gainful employment regulations being formulated by the U.S. Department of Education would hold more academic programs accountable for student success after graduation. The draft standards would drop loan-rate repayment measurements that were struck down last year by a federal judge, and would use only two debt-to-earnings ratios. In addition, the number of programs subject to the standards would be more than double the number affected under the previous proposal.
