How to avoid discrimination while doing criminal background checks

Many companies feel compelled to avoid the dangers of negligent hiring by performing criminal background checks on job applicants, employment attorney Robert Ottinger writes. At the same time, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has gone after businesses that use such checks to exclude all former criminals, saying the practice might unfairly penalize minorities. Ottinger offers a few tips for perform background checks without trampling on individual rights.
