The jellyfish that thwarted Diana Nyad's previous attempts to swim from Cuba to Florida were themselves thwarted this time by a silicone face mask that allowed her to swim without fear of poisonous stings. Prosthetics expert Stefan Knauss spent a year developing the custom mask, which protected Nyad but made it more difficult to avoid swallowing seawater. "As difficult as the swimming was, I was not stung once. Those deadly tentacles could not penetrate," Nyad said.
