Most common hospital-acquired infections cost $9.8 billion annually

A report in JAMA Internal Medicine found that about 440,000 adult inpatients in the U.S. contract one of the top five hospital-acquired infections annually. Those infections carry an estimated annual cost of $9.8 billion, with about 33% of costs associated with surgical site infections, about 25% linked to ventilator-related pneumonia and another 25% tied to catheter-associated urinary tract infections.
