Snack evolution has been paved by peanuts and pretzels

Peanuts, which arrived in North America aboard slave ships, were the first American snack food, but it was commercial production of pretzels, pioneered by Julius Sturgis in the 1860s, that brought snacking into the mainstream. As more companies produced snacks, they added logos and marketing to create a sense of glamour.
