Study: Recess has benefits in and out of the classroom

While schools in Washington, D.C., will reduce time for recess each day to a minimum of 15 minutes, researchers have found that the playtime -- when well-structured and organized -- actually can benefit learning and help curb bullying. The study, conducted by Mathematica Policy Research and Stanford University's John W. Gardner Center for Youth and Their Communities, focused on Playworks, which operated recess programs at low-income schools, including dozens in Washington, D.C.
