L.A. station's switch to sports puts AM radio in spotlight

The move by KFWB-AM in Los Angeles to abandon news and talk after 46 years in favor of wall-to-wall sports underscores the struggle for relevance facing AM radio nationwide. But Thom Callahan, head of the Southern California Broadcasters Association, says AM stations draw an audience of 3.47 million in greater Los Angeles each week and that AM has particular relevance for local ethnic communities.
