France draws Syria closer

France is continuing its interest in forging relations with Syria, with French President Nicolas Sarkozy's visit to Damascus following Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's France visit as guest of honor for Bastille Day. Sarkozy's move marks a break with U.S. policy toward Syria as well as with France's previous policy: former French President Jacques Chirac boycotted the Bastille Day festivities because of Syria's participation.
