AAFP calls for release of cardiovascular practice guidelines

A decision by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute to stop providing clinical practice guidelines and instead produce only evidence reviews leaves long-awaited recommendations on hypertension, high cholesterol and adult obesity in limbo, AAFP Board Chair Glen Stream, M.D., wrote in a letter to NHLBI Director Gary Gibbons, M.D. Stream said the Academy believes the guidelines already developed through a collaborative model that included input from organizations such as the AAFP should be published as soon as possible and "not be left to organizations that are only focused on one aspect of cardiovascular disease."
