To close the Big Data talent gap, try casting a bigger net

The emerging field of data science will require millions of new specialists over the next few years, but it's a mistake to think that all of them need to be quants. With analysts predicting a shortage of as many as 190,000 Big Data professionals in the U.S. in the next five years, experts such as Betsy Page Sigman, a professor at Georgetown University's McDonough School of Business, say smart companies will groom talent from non-data disciplines to fill the gap. "Advances in software, in interface design and things like that will make it easier to analyze Big Data in the future," she said. "So it won't be as big of a technological hurdle."
