Feds may tighten rail safety regulations

The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration is reviewing proposed requirements to upgrade new and older DOT-111 cars to make them more puncture resistant. "Now is the time to make sure safety regulations are robust enough for the increased hazmat movement on our rails, roads and in our pipelines," PHMSA Administrator Cynthia Quarterman said. The American Chemistry Council and other industry groups say further studies are needed to show the changes would improve safety for cars carrying crude oil or ethanol.
