Hannaford exchanges HFCs for carbon dioxide refrigerant

Hannaford Supermarkets has opened the first U.S. store that uses carbon dioxide refrigerant to chill and freeze food, rather than supergreenhouse gas hydrofluorocarbons. The store expects to reduce its carbon footprint by 3.4 million pounds annually. Other retailers, such as Whole Foods Market and Angelo Caputo's Fresh Markets, plan to follow suit this year.
