Protect pets and family members from rabies

Veterinarian Donna Solomon shares the story of her son's encounter with a bat that flew into his face as he was riding his bike in Illinois and reminds owners to vaccinate dogs, cats -- including indoor cats -- and ferrets to protect their family from rabies. Worldwide, rabies kills 55,000 people each year, mostly in Asia and Africa, according to the CDC. In the U.S., wild carnivores and bats are the main rabies reservoir. Elsewhere, rabid dogs are the main source of human infections.
