A report released by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration involving nearly 70,000 individuals age 12 and older revealed that the overall rate of illicit drug use held steady at about 9% since 2011. Among 12- to 17-year-olds, the rates of drinking, tobacco use, and substance dependence or abuse dropped in 2012. Although marijuana use increased in almost each age group between 2007 and 2012, it declined among people younger than 18 in 2012. Heroin use has risen sharply since 2007.
